About

ATEA Creative Hub

ATEA was created as a space of experimentation, a platform for collaboration, production and exchange of knowledge. Established in 2010 and headed by an interdisciplinary collective called SomosMexas, ATEA hosts creative workshops in one of the most complex, interesting and revered areas of the Historic Center of Mexico City: the neighborhood of La Merced.

With the explicit aim to work closely with neighbors, tenants and merchants, and to address the neighborhood’s history of violence and prostitution, ATEA offers a series of cultural activities, workshops, talks and exhibitions focused on the betterment of La Merced’s image. ATEA operates based on the needs of La Merced’s residents and attempts to remedy the negative portrayal associated with this community and its abject social conditions.

ATEA is well aware of the implications of its location and assumes social responsibility, which is why it constantly seeks to activate spaces using a variety of projects that cross the boundaries of architecture, art, music and other contemporary practices. The team works hard to inspire community participation in order to generate a collective creation of the neighborhood.
